Painted Interior Doors: How to Recognize Quality and Make the Right Choice?
Painted interior doors are most commonly finished using one of two types of coatings: water-based paint or polyurethane-based paint.
Polyurethane paint provides a smooth, durable, and pleasant-to-the-touch surface. Compared to water-based paints, it is generally more resistant to scratches, offers a smoother finish, and is easier to maintain.
Painted interior doors are available in a wide range of colours and designs. They can feature either a sleek, smooth surface or contemporary routed patterns and decorative mouldings, giving the doors either a more classic appearance or a distinctly modern look.
The quality of painted interior doors depends not only on the type of paint used but also on the door’s construction. For high-quality painted doors, the surface material should ideally be at least 6 mm thick. Thinner materials are acceptable only when the construction includes additional reinforcement, such as particleboard or tubular particleboard core filling.
The door frame is equally important and should contain a sufficient amount of solid wood. If the frame is made solely from MDF, its rigidity may be inadequate, which can affect the door’s functionality and stability over time.
To maintain a high-quality and aesthetically pleasing appearance after installation, it is advisable to choose painted interior doors with adjustable, or telescopic, architraves. These allow for precise installation, ensuring a tight fit against the wall while eliminating the need for visible fixing nails.

Polyurethane paint is usually better because it is more resistant to scratches, has a smoother finish, and is easier to clean and maintain.
A strong door frame helps keep the door stable and working properly. Frames with solid wood are generally stronger than frames made only from MDF.
Telescopic architraves are adjustable trims around the door. They help create a neat installation, fit tightly against the wall, and eliminate the need for visible fixing nails.
